Everywhere you look is a convoy of doplar/radar equipped vans and cameramen with their fancy gear shooting and documenting everything in sight. Don’t get me wrong, Earl is DEFINITELY a force of nature that’s worth paying attention to, but it seems that the hype surrounding it is starting to go a bit “hollywood”. All within 12 hours, Earl has downgraded from 145 mph to 115 mph — and is expected to decrease in wind speed before it arrives to the Outer Banks. The eye of the storm is forecasted to be over the ocean keeping the heavy winds and most of the rain out to sea. Areas South of Oregon Inlet will certainly see the most impact as Earl brushes by with wind gusts up to 75 mph. Further North “in town” will see gusts up to 65 mph. Most locals here on the island are staying put. They have experienced these types of conditions before and know what to expect. Power outages, tidal surges, flooded waters and closed roads are what comes with living in this area. I think everyone that lives in this area can agree with me when I say…. I’ll take a hurricane over a tornado/earthquake/fire any day. At least you can spot it a thousand miles away.

On another note, Tropical Storm Fiona is on track to mow over Bermuda with 50 mph winds, then making the curve out to sea and loosing strength. Tropical Depression Gaston is still a mystery. Stay tuned.

Hurricane Earl quickly gathered strength Monday, becoming a dangerous Category 4 storm as it roared past Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Current winds of 135 mph and a forecasted track to “brush” the East Coast is surely bringing some serious swell. Directly in front of the Outer Banks, Earl is expected to be somewhere in between a Cat 2 and Cat 3 sometime around Thursday, September 2. Any small shift in the track could dramatically alter whether it makes landfall or whether it remains over the open ocean. Please stay on alert – not just for waves but the safety of others.

I tried to find some great meaning in “Earl” on urban dictionary but failed miserably. sorry

His fascinating live shows feature him solo on-stage with a Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, and he creates his backing loops in the moment, building and improvising as he goes on his custom-made ten-string guitar, and thanks to his equally as quirky, upbeat, and semi-surreal songs (which he frequently weaves into extended, half-improvised medleys) and his warm, friendly tenor singing voice, Williams is an utterly unique performer whose musical eccentricities don’t keep him from being immediately accessible. A native of Virginia, Williams received his first guitar at the age of three, although he admits he didn’t really learn to play it until he was in his early teens. He attended high school in his hometown of Fredericksburg, and began playing solo gigs when he was 17. He discovered the new age guitar genius of Michael Hedges a year or so later, and Hedges has been a lifelong influence on Williams’ approach to the guitar.

Either way you slice it, she’ll be in the neighborhood… and will bring some decent swell with her. The forecast is looking good, however the winds are going to be rather questionable during this duration of swell. The storm is forecast to slowly re-intensify into a Category 2 hurricane over the next five days, the National Hurricane Center said. Danielle regained hurricane status Tuesday night and gained a little strength by early Wednesday. Riding on Danielle’s heals is another tropical depression that has a near 100% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone (soon to be named Earl) in the next 48 hours. Looks like things are heating up in the Atlantic! Stay tuned to obxsurfinfo.com as we monitor these storms closely throughout the weekend and into next week.
