Everywhere you look is a convoy of doplar/radar equipped vans and cameramen with their fancy gear shooting and documenting everything in sight. Don’t get me wrong, Earl is DEFINITELY a force of nature that’s worth paying attention to, but it seems that the hype surrounding it is starting to go a bit “hollywood”. All within 12 hours, Earl has downgraded from 145 mph to 115 mph — and is expected to decrease in wind speed before it arrives to the Outer Banks. The eye of the storm is forecasted to be over the ocean keeping the heavy winds and most of the rain out to sea. Areas South of Oregon Inlet will certainly see the most impact as Earl brushes by with wind gusts up to 75 mph. Further North “in town” will see gusts up to 65 mph. Most locals here on the island are staying put. They have experienced these types of conditions before and know what to expect. Power outages, tidal surges, flooded waters and closed roads are what comes with living in this area. I think everyone that lives in this area can agree with me when I say…. I’ll take a hurricane over a tornado/earthquake/fire any day. At least you can spot it a thousand miles away.

On another note, Tropical Storm Fiona is on track to mow over Bermuda with 50 mph winds, then making the curve out to sea and loosing strength. Tropical Depression Gaston is still a mystery. Stay tuned.

Thursday 9/2/2010 (6:30 am). Hey, this is Jamie with your morning detailed report. Winds increasing out of the East at 10 – 15 but of course this is expected to change with Earls approach later today. Seas are up to around 5 ft with chest – head high and choppy waves faces. A Hurricane warning is of course posted so beware of the ocean, respect it or it will teach a mighty lesson. Be aware of rips and unless you are on a leashed device, STAY OUT OF THE WATER. SPECIAL NOTE: Hurricane Earl –410 mi S of Hatteras– is packing winds of 145 with gusts at 175 and is still expected to brush our coast overnight tonight into Friday morning.

Thursday 8/31 **Evening 6 pm Update**: Big Earl, now a Cat 3 with 115 mph sustained and 140 mph gusts, 185 mi south of the cape, is on his way in tonight, like it or not. Swells at the DS buoy have just started hitting the 19 ft mark with a 15 second period. Bright side, he has seemed to shift to a more Northerly path which will hopefully begin to move more Northeasterly later tonight. Even with this late turn North we are likely to feel Tropical Storm if not Hurricane force winds overnight with the eye of this beast passing 30 – 50 mi east of Hatteras. Batten down the hatches, tie down what isn’t nailed down and hang on. We are going to experience some full on heaving swells tonight into Friday, some models pushing 20′ + feet. Of course with this will be considerable overwash occuring up & down the beach road. To boot, the peak of this swell coincides with our overnight high tide (Kitty Hawk 1:43 am). Needless to say conditions during this thing will be textbook Victory at Sea. I’d like to say ‘post storm’ cleaner conditions will be setting up for us but debris likely littering the surf zone may be a serious problem so be very aware. Just look for a missing… home. Behind Earl sits TS Fiona and now TD Gaston… the mighty Atlantic is going off folks, stay tuned to the daily reports & the forecast to stay on top of it all~ obxsurfinfo.com

Earlsday 9/2/2010 (2:15pm) This is Brent with the afternoon report for Thursday, Sept. 2. Just got back from the beach and have to say….. not so impressive (at the moment). There’s a steady 16-20 mph East wind out there that are knocking the surf heights down to the head high+ range. It’s really choppy with a swift northward current. Some skimboarders are having fun and I saw one kiteboarder out there but that’s about it. The surf factor is not so much. Yesterday we saw larger waves – which is a bit strange now that Earl is closer to our coast. Diamond Shoals Buoy is reading 13.8 feet @ 15 seconds so expect the surf heights to climb as the evening progresses. Tomorrow I would expect it to be victory at sea for most of the morning. Some wind forecast is showing NW winds starting as early as 8am and shifting to WNW by noon……. hmmmmm The WNW forecast at noon is expecting to be 30 mph so you might need a 12 foot longboard to get into the waves. Also to note (if you plan on surfing tomorrow) — the water quality is probably going to be questionably poor with heavy rain in the forecast overnight. Watch the outpours and all the filth that gets spewed out of them. Please remember that these conditions are for the “expert” swimmer/surfer. This is no joke. Surf heights could be anywhere from 10-20′ in the next 24 hours. Don’t be foolish and end up as another statistic. If you are unsure about surfing in these kind of conditions, keep your eyes on Saturday as the swell heights are supposed to reduce with cleaner conditions. Saturday might be epic. Keep an eye on the daily report and forecast for frequent updates. Directly in front of the Outer Banks, Earl is expected to be somewhere in between a Cat 2 and Cat 3 sometime around Thursday, September 2. Any small shift in the track could dramatically alter whether it makes landfall or whether it remains over the open ocean. Please stay on alert – not just for waves but the safety of others.

I tried to find some great meaning in “Earl” on urban dictionary but failed miserably. sorry

His fascinating live shows feature him solo on-stage with a Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, and he creates his backing loops in the moment, building and improvising as he goes on his custom-made ten-string guitar, and thanks to his equally as quirky, upbeat, and semi-surreal songs (which he frequently weaves into extended, half-improvised medleys) and his warm, friendly tenor singing voice, Williams is an utterly unique performer whose musical eccentricities don’t keep him from being immediately accessible. A native of Virginia, Williams received his first guitar at the age of three, although he admits he didn’t really learn to play it until he was in his early teens. He attended high school in his hometown of Fredericksburg, and began playing solo gigs when he was 17. He discovered the new age guitar genius of Michael Hedges a year or so later, and Hedges has been a lifelong influence on Williams’ approach to the guitar.

Either way you slice it, she’ll be in the neighborhood… and will bring some decent swell with her. The forecast is looking good, however the winds are going to be rather questionable during this duration of swell. The storm is forecast to slowly re-intensify into a Category 2 hurricane over the next five days, the National Hurricane Center said. Danielle regained hurricane status Tuesday night and gained a little strength by early Wednesday. Riding on Danielle’s heals is another tropical depression that has a near 100% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone (soon to be named Earl) in the next 48 hours. Looks like things are heating up in the Atlantic! Stay tuned to obxsurfinfo.com as we monitor these storms closely throughout the weekend and into next week.
