Calling all Outer Banks surfers! We need your help. Or — more specifically — Surfing For Autism does. The organizers are less than two weeks away from their third annual event, Aug. 13 at Comfort Inn, South Nags Head. Every year it grows, touching more young kids’ lives and reaching them in ways that are otherwise not possible. This year, there are 60 registered — twice as many as 2010 — all for free. Surfing for Autism wants to keep it that way, and they want to help more kids. So this time they’re also having a silent auction on the night of the event in order to raise money. All proceeds will go into next year’s event so they don’t have to turn away a single family. If you have any product to donate — or even better, a little cash — please contact Mark Slagle (surfingforautism@embarqmail.com). Also, while they’ve lined up all the instructors, they can always use a little help on the beach. (The event runs from roughly 9am to 2pm.) You can see a video from last year’s event, HERE. And for more info, check out their Webpage. Thanks so much.

Surfing For Autism is an autism/asperger’s awareness event August 14th on the Outer Banks of NC. Local surfers are partnering up with children who have autism/asperger’s and introduce them to paddling, surfing, and a new way to have fun in the sun. If you’d like to register your child , click here. Check the Autism Society of NC’s website to learn more about autism, the importance of early intervention, parental support, and the latest research concerning this wide-spread disorder.

The local OBX Chapter of the NC Autism Society meets regularly, providing support to caregivers and educators, and promoting autism education throughout the community. Visit their website to find out how to become more involved locally.
