According to the Virginia-Pilot (PilotOnline.com), off-road vehicles will now have to pay a fee and watch a short educational video in order to access the Cape Hatteras beaches via 4×4. The exact fee is not yet set but some estimates are $90-150 for a yearly permit / $30-50 for a weekly permit. You can find a report on the new regulations HERE. (National Park Service Section). The good news: the beach will still be accessible. The bad news: The land that was donated for public use now comes with a price tag. Looks like this NE swell has finally started to take shape – going from total chaos to fun rideable conditions. It was suffering a hangover this morning but has significantly improved from yesterday. A few pics were taken this morning and the rest were taken around noon today in Nags Head. Check the report page for details.

Move over Emily, Here Comes Irene (Currently a Cat. 2 in the Bahamas)
Posted in: News and Happenings, Surfing, Uncategorized
Picking up steam, Irene, the first hurricane of 2011, looks headed for major storm status — and for Florida and the Carolinas. Irene is still passing through the Caribbean and will soon start curving to the north. Irene is forecast to make landfall in the US near Wilmington, NC Saturday evening. However, it is important to note that this is not a definitive forecast, the average forecast error for day 5 is 250 miles. The timing of Irene’s recurvature depends on how quickly several small troughs of low pressure in the Northeastern US move to the east. After Saturday, Irene may pose a threat to the mid-Atlantic coastline and locations further north, but it is too early to make a skillful forecast for those regions. NHC is forecasting for Irene to become a major hurricane (winds faster than 110 mph), within 24 hours, then reaching peak intensity at 130 mph (Category 4 storm) by 8pm EDT Thursday evening. This could become one of the strongest hurricanes to reach landfall in the Carolinas. With that said, this storm will definitely be something to keep a sharp eye on. We will continue to monitor this system and give you updates on the surf as we near the weekend. -

We are currently in the process of making some major improvements to our site. If you haven’t noticed already, we’ve added in a streaming cam back to the home page so you can have the latest visual of what’s happening on the ocean. (the cam is located in Kitty Hawk). After listening to our viewers, studying other surf report sites, and simply tuning into the data that makes the most difference in our area, we’ve decided to add some key features and lessen the “click through” process. For example, we condensed our Morning and Afternoon report pages to simply a “Detailed Surf Report” page. Let’s face it, the wind/tide/swell can change at any given moment so this page is dedicated to giving you the most up-to-date information along with a written description of what to expect throughout the day. (no need to toggle back and forth to see which page is most current!) When the waves are better than average, we plan on updating the “Detailed Surf Report” page twice or more to give you the best coverage you need throughout the day. Also, when the surf gets good, we will provide additional information like still photos and youtube clips of sets rolling in, etc… We actually have a few more really exciting (useful) features in the works that will be coming out soon, so stick around! Thanks for supporting our site and as always, please give us your feedback and make sure you thank our advertisers as they are the ones who make this site free to you.
