This winter on the Outer Banks has been unseasonably warm. For people that enjoy the great outdoors, it’s been awesome. For fishermen, not so much as they are waiting for a good cold snap to help bring down the striped bass that have been hanging out in the Chesapeake Bay for the last few weeks. With this great weather, we have had some of the best sunrises/sunsets that I’ve ever experienced in January. Thank you Tammie from Ocean Watch OBX for capturing another great sunrise at Avalon Pier!

North Carolina has the highest potential for offshore wind power on the east coast. This massive, untapped energy source could reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and help create jobs. The only thing missing is political will. That’s why we’re urging decision makers to support new requirements and incentives for offshore wind.Click HERE to view a pre-crafted letter, and add your signature by filling out the form on the right. It will be sent on Saturday, October 15th, so act fast to get the word out to your friends and family. Together, we can convince our representatives in the General Assembly and Congress to create the necessary policies to support offshore wind for North Carolina.

I spent more time in the water than I did taking pictures so I only have a few to post. Conditions were improving all day and the wind for the most part remained offshore. Swell was stacked on the horizon with solid swell filling in from the formerly Cat 4 Ophelia hurricane that tracked Northeast of Bermuda recently. Needless to say, this unusual swell (6+ feet at 16+ seconds) made for some nicely formed sets that graced our beaches. There should be some swell leftovers and offshore winds for manana so stay tuned!

Move over Emily, Here Comes Irene (Currently a Cat. 2 in the Bahamas)
Posted in: News and Happenings, Surfing, Uncategorized
Picking up steam, Irene, the first hurricane of 2011, looks headed for major storm status — and for Florida and the Carolinas. Irene is still passing through the Caribbean and will soon start curving to the north. Irene is forecast to make landfall in the US near Wilmington, NC Saturday evening. However, it is important to note that this is not a definitive forecast, the average forecast error for day 5 is 250 miles. The timing of Irene’s recurvature depends on how quickly several small troughs of low pressure in the Northeastern US move to the east. After Saturday, Irene may pose a threat to the mid-Atlantic coastline and locations further north, but it is too early to make a skillful forecast for those regions. NHC is forecasting for Irene to become a major hurricane (winds faster than 110 mph), within 24 hours, then reaching peak intensity at 130 mph (Category 4 storm) by 8pm EDT Thursday evening. This could become one of the strongest hurricanes to reach landfall in the Carolinas. With that said, this storm will definitely be something to keep a sharp eye on. We will continue to monitor this system and give you updates on the surf as we near the weekend. -

A Pato Banton concert is an event not to be missed and an experience not to be forgotten. Positive Vibrations abound with a beat to keep you on your dancing feet, while Pato delivers a message that is food for the mind and soul. Many have considered his charismatic performance as live theatre where no show is alike and audience members become participants in the experience. Pato dialogues with the crowd on a range of topics including current day events and spiritual freedom while keeping the vibes upbeat and fun! The direction of the concert is totally based on the feedback Pato receives from the audience as there is no fixed set list. Many have said that the positivity generated from the stage has changed their lives forever. Sometimes Pato invites his fans to join him in a prayer circle after the show, where some have cried while sharing their stories of contemplated suicide, isolation after losing a loved one, struggles with substance abuse and how their personal connection with Pato has given them the strength to “Stay Positive” & “Never Give In.”
Check out one of Reggae’s greatest this Friday night at the Outer Banks Brewing Station!
