As many know, Hurricane Irene was a devastating storm that ripped right up the Pamlico and Albamarle Sound flooding everything in site. Even though it was only a category 1 storm, it’s destruction was beyond repair. Many folks South of Oregon Inlet are still suffering from damage with a much anticipated bridge that’s slated to open this Tuesday. The people on Hatteras Island need your help. This Saturday (October 15) from 12 noon to 7pm, Outer Banks Boarding Company is hosting a Hurricane Irene relief benefit with all proceeds being donated to locals affected by the storm. There will be both live and silent auctions for new surfboards from Patagonia, Firewire and Super plus Wetsuits from Hurley, Patagonia and Rip Curl. There will also be live music provided by The Delimiters, Jesse Hines and Corissa Snyder. Food will also be provided by Pizzazz Pizza and High Cotton BBQ. Rip Curl Presents the East Coast Premier of “FLOAT”, with Globe’s “Year 0000″
Posted in: News and Happenings
Come check out the double feature back to back movie premier of Rip Curl’s FLOAT, and Globe’s YEAR 0000, during ECSC weekend in Virginia Beach, VA.
Rip Curl International Presents: FLOAT (One Boat, Six Months, 13,000 Islands, 25,000 Bintangs, The Infinite Search…)
YEAR ZERO is a modern take on high performance surfing set in a post-apocalyptic world, reminiscent of Mad Max or an HG Wells novel. It tells a story of a band of renegade surfers, including Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Nate Tyler, Taj Burrow, CJ Hobgood and Damien Hobgood, on a road trip through the apocalypse in search of waves, women, and good times. The film’s original soundtrack by BLACK MOUNTAIN, whom VICE MAGAZINE has called, “One of the best rock n’ roll bands of our time,” creates a sonic landscape that fully delivers the immersive experience that director Joe G envisioned for the film. The film was shot on location around the world entirely in super 16mm film and offers a unique concept with stunning visuals that capture the essence of surfing in a novel setting. YEAR ZERO follows GLOBE’S previous award winning productions such as SECRET MACHINE and NEW EMISSIONS OF LIGHT AND SOUND and is undoubtedly GLOBE’S largest film project to date. A global series for the best young surfers around the world to showcase their talentThe Rip Curl GromSearch is a worldwide series of events designed specifically for grommets. Uniformed across the Globe, the events give groms the center stage to show the world the progression of the sport.
In the US, the Rip Curl GromSearch brings the best surfers from across the nation to their local, regional competition with the hopes of making the Rip Curl National Final at the Rip Curl Pro Search Somwhere in Puerto Rico in the Fall.
With a youthful vibe, Rip Curl GromSearch allows the contestants to feel relaxed while providing them competitive experience and an atmosphere similar to a World Championship Tour event necessary for developing their budding surfing careers.
The 2010 North American series is made up of 4 regional championship events and the winners of each event advances to the National Final to compete for the title of Rip Curl GromSearch National Champion. The winner of the premier Boys and Girls 16/Under division at the National Final wins an all-expense paid trip to the Rip Curl Pro Surf & Music Festival at Bells Beach the following April to compete in the Rip Curl GromSearch International Finals!
The Rip Curl GromSearch National Finals has sent incredible surfers to compete at Bells each year including Mason Ho, Tyler Newton, Kolohe Andino, Malia Manuel, Nat Young, and Nage Melamed.
The first-ever Rip Curl GromSearch was held at Jan Juc, Torquay, Australia in 1999. This led to the creation of a National series including Europe, the United States, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, and New Zealand.
Stephanie Gilmore and Matt Wilkinson won the first International Final in 2004. Mason Ho beat Jordy Smith to become the first non-Australian Rip Curl GromSearch Champion in 2005. Progression has continued with big name winners over the years like Owen Wright, Sally Fitzgibbons, Gabriel Medina and Alana Blanchard.
