First of all, OBXsurfinfo.com would like to thank one of our newest advertisers: The Outer Banks Brewing Station. Without advertisers, our site wouldn’t exist… and we couldn’t be more stoked to have another local (and tourist) hot-spot on our list of great supporters. If you are unfamiliar with the Outer Banks Brewing Station, they are located in the heart of Kill Devil Hills near the Wright Brother’s Memorial on the main road. (Milepost 8.5)  Just look for the wind turbine which is located in their backyard. They offer unique quality food and hand crafted beer in a comfortable, festive setting. Toss in some live music and a huge backyard suited to keep all ages happy and you have the perfect recipe for everyone.

The Brewing Station is opening back up for the season tomorrow (Feb. 10) starting at 11:30am. Show some support and stop by for a visit!

“Preserve Future Access to S-Turns,” is an effort from the Surfrider Foundation Outer Banks Chapter to ensure that surfers are able to continue enjoying what Surfer Magazine has claimed “one of the 100 best waves in the world”. S-Turns is located just North of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island. The S-Curves/S-Turns area has a deepwater trench offshore that causes the waves to have a bit more energy in comparison to neighboring beach breaks and is one of the most powerful waves on the East Coast. For many surfers, this is the main, if not only reason they decide to travel as far South as Rodanthe to score great surf. Now with the recent damage done from Hurricane Irene, there is the potential to have a permanent bridge built that might restrict all access to this coveted surf spot.  To ensure that the Department of Transportation takes into consideration the opinions of  surfers and beach goers alike, please take a brief moment to make yourself heard on this online petition: Click HERE: “Preserve Future Access to S-Turns”. Please consider signing soon as the deadline is January 20.

Due to bad weather, the 2011 NC Big Sweep was canceled back in September and is now rescheduled for TODAY! Saturday, November 19 from 9am-12 noon. This year will be the 25th Annual Big Sweep across North Carolina. Dare County residents have been strong supporters of the event since its inception in 1987. Given Hurricane Irene and the extra cleanup needed along our coast and inland waterways, it is our hope for this event to be even stronger than years past. Please visit one of the below zone locations for your bags, cleanup gear, and direction on where to clean.

    Bonnett Street
    KDH Bath House
    Jennette’s Pier
    Southern Shores Fire Department
    NC Aquarium
Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School
    Kitty Hawk Bath House
    Nags Head Town Hall
    Pea Island Visitor Center
    Coquina Beach Bath House
    Chickahauk Beach Access

After the cleanup, make sure you visit The Outer Banks Brewing Station for “Trashfest” – from Noon – 4pm and enjoy food, drinks and live music from SOULone. Bring your bag of trash and information card and get in FREE.

Should you have any questions please contact Scott Lawrence at (252) 441-0581 or via email at Scott@boldprintdesign.com.

North Carolina has the highest potential for offshore wind power on the east coast. This massive, untapped energy source could reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and help create jobs. The only thing missing is political will. That’s why we’re urging decision makers to support new requirements and incentives for offshore wind.

Click HERE to view a pre-crafted letter, and add your signature by filling out the form on the right. It will be sent on Saturday, October 15th, so act fast to get the word out to your friends and family. Together, we can convince our representatives in the General Assembly and Congress to create the necessary policies to support offshore wind for North Carolina.

For all of you who have attended this event in the last 17 years – I’m sure you would agree that it’s a fun day at the beach with lots of great prizes, food and of course… the paddle battles.  There’s a division for everyone (groms to grown-ups, short boards to SUP’s). Last year was the most successful event thus far – raising over $5,000 for local scholarships and educational programs. This year the Surfrider Foundation, Outer Banks Chapter is looking to raise even more money as this event just gets bigger and better. So far, tax deductible donations have been flooding in but the Surfrider Foundation needs your help! If you know of anyone and/or business that would like to help raise money, please contact brent@obxsurfinfo.com or call 252-256-0423. The deadline for donations (and to get sponsor’s logo/name on posters and T-shirts) is Wednesday, July 6.  Raffle tickets will also go on sale for this event with great prizes that include: Stand-up Skate/Stick and a custom surfboard shaped by Mike Rowe from Hooked Surfboards! Don’t miss this event and if you can’t attend but would still like to purchase raffle tickets, please contact brent@obxsurfinfo.com or call 252-256-0423. Your beach is under threat today! Congress is considering three new bills that could open up much of the US coastline to offshore drilling. Please tell Congress to oppose new legislation that would fast track new offshore drilling in our ocean waters. House Bills 1229, 1230, and1231 would accelerate the leasing process for offshore drilling and mandate new drilling in sensitive ocean areas off virtually every coast.

It takes virtually seconds to take action. Just click HERE

Please come out and vote for the next round of board members. In fact, if you haven’t already, please use this ‘action alert’ to tell your NC senator to keep the bag ban in place: CLICK HERE Then forward to any NC residents. Please come out and support your local chapter!
